Project JEDI with Olin College of Engineering grad Jacob Uy ’24 – Turning Science Fiction into Reality
Jacob Uy ’24 is an Olin College of Engineering graduate, who founded HeroTech when he was in high school. HeroTech designs gadgets that bring science fiction into real life applications. While at Olin, Uy worked with fellow Olin students Madie Tong ’25 and Aaron Codrington ’25 on Project JEDI (photo credit: Olin College), where they designed a fully working Star Wars light saber. You can watch their YouTube video (see above) and use their included design specs and tutorials to create your own light saber. Please note HeroTech’s DISCLAIMER: “This lightsaber is a prototype and is potentially dangerous to DIY. While I’m working to change that, I can’t currently recommend this for anyone without engineering expertise and the will to troubleshoot for hours.”
From HeroTech’s website, “Become a Hero. HEROTECH engineers gadgets that give people abilities and powers from science fiction. We share our process on social media, along with files, links, and tutorials so that others can do the same. We do this because when people see science fiction brought to real life, it’s inspiring. And when people can do it themselves, it’s empowering. We’re on a mission to inspire and empower people: we’re on a mission to prove that anybody, anywhere can become a hero.”
